Mapleson A circuit

Created: 27/4/2004
Updated: 6/12/2017
This is the first in our series of flash animation images that  have developed to depict the gas flow occurring in anaesthetic breathing circuits.
Below is a demonstration of the gas flow that occurs in a Mapleson A circuit. This circuit is efficient for spontaneous ventilation because exhaled dead space gas is reused at the next inspiration, and exhaled alveolar gas passes out through the spill valve.
