The patient is positioned in lateral decubitus with the leg being
blocked on top.
Important landmarks are: the greater trochanter, ischial tuberosity and tendon of the biceps femoris muscle. Draw a line connecting the greater trochanter with the ischial tuberosity, which is marked and divided into half. Another line is drawn connecting the mid-point of the line to the upper edge of the popliteal fossa. The injection site is found 3-4 cm caudal to this line.
