Glycopeptides

Mechanism
Inhibit Cell wall & RNA synthesis

Spectrum
Gram + only

Especially

  • Staphlyococcus
  • Streptococcus
  • Clostridium
  • Enterococcus

Drugs

Teicoplainin

  • Less toxic Vancomycin substitute
  • Good for severe infections
  • Especially penicillin resistant bugs
  • Staph aureus & Epidermidis
  • Dose 400mg BD for 3 doses, then 200-400mg OD IV

Vancomycin

Similar spectrum to Teicoplanin

  • More nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic
  • Can be given by bolus or continuous infusion
  • Plasma levels need monitoring
  • Bolus dose 1g BD IV
  • Trough levels 30 mins before 3rd dose should be 10-20 mcg/ml
