Aminoglycosides

Mechanism
Damage bacterial ribosomes causing misreading of mRNA
This inhibits bacterial protein synthesis

Spectrum
Coliforms, Pseudomonas, Staphylococci

Toxicity
Ototoxicity and Nephrotoxicity

Gentamycin

Careful with renal impairment and long-term therapy

  • Various dosing regiemes
  • Bolus 5-7 mg/kg
  • Trough level should be <2mg/l
  • Peak therapeutic level 5-10mg/l
