Macrolides

Mechansism
Inhibit protein synthesis

Spectrum

  • Is similiar to penicillin so useful in presence of penicillin allergy
  • Useful against
    • staphylococcus
    • haemophillus
    • bacteroides
    • campylobacter
    • legionella
    • mycoplasma

Drugs

Erythromycin

  • Useful prokinetic
  • Dose 250 – 500 mg QID PO or IV

Clarithromycin

  • Similar spectrum to erythromycin, but better tissue penetration
  • Dose 250 – 500 mg PO BD
  • Dose 500 mg IV BD
