Fluoroquinolones

Mechanism
Developed from Nalidixic acid
Inhibit DNA Gyrase and interfere with DNA replication.

Spectrum

  • Broad
  • Active against G-ve aerobes including pseudomonas and staph
  • Generally poor against Strep and anaerobes
  • Caution - fluroquinolones reduce metabolism of theophyllines and warfarin and lower the seizure threshold

Drugs

Ciprofloxacin

  • Dose 400mg BD IV
  • Dose 500mg BD O
