The role of the dietitian on ICU

The role of the dietitian on ICU is to work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary ICU team to promote optimal nutrition of the critically ill patient.

Important aspects of this role include:

  • To improve feed delivery (both parenteral and enteral)
  • To help minimise nutritional losses
  • To encourage oral diet when not contraindicated
  • To provide education and training on ICU nutrition
  • To undertake research and audit
  • To assist nutrition guideline and protocol development
  • To set standards for monitoring of nutrition
  • To ensure adequate preoperative nutritional optimisation
