Spragg et al. Surfactant in ARDS. NEJM 2004

Created: 15/5/2007

Paper type

Randomised Controlled Trial

Reference

Spragg RG, Lewis JF, Walmrath HD et al.
Effect of Recombinant Surfactant Protein C- based Surfactant on the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
New Engl J Med 2004; 351: 884-92

Major Finding

The routine  use of a short course of human recombinant surfactant protein C in ARDS patients appear to improve oxygenation but is not associated with improvements in mortality or a reduction in the duration of ventilation.

Point for discussion:

Would the results be different if only intra-pulmonary ARDS was targeted?
