ARDSnet: Fluid Strategy. NEJM 2006.

Created: 15/5/2007

Paper type

Randomised Controlled Trial

Reference

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute ARDS Clinical Trials Network
Comparison of Two Fluid-Management Strategies in Acute Lung Injury.
NEJM 2006; 354:2564-2575.

Major Finding

A conservative fluid management strategy does not decrease mortality in acute lung injury. In selected patients it reduces time of invasive ventilation and time spent in intensive care.

Point for discussion:

At what stage of the ARDS process should a restrictive fluid strategy be adopted?
