Ventilation with lower tidal volumes as compared with traditional tidal volumes for acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome.
New England Journal of Medicine 2000; 342: 1301-1308.

Major Finding

Treating ARDS patients with low tidal volume ventilation (6ml/kg) reduced hospital mortality for all comers for ARDS from 39.8% to 31% compared to high tidal volume (12ml/kg) ventilation.
