Lundin et al. ARDS and nitric oxide RCT. ICM 1999

Created: 15/5/2007
Updated: 15/5/2007

Paper type

Randomised Controlled Trial

Reference

Lundin S. Mang H. Smithies M. Stenqvist O. Frostell C.
Inhalation of nitric oxide in acute lung injury: results of a European multicentre study. The European Study Group of Inhaled Nitric Oxide.
Intensive Care Medicine 1999 25(9):911-9.

Major Finding

Inhaled NO therapy does not improve outcome from ALI / ARDS.

Point for discussion:

Although this study suggests that nitric oxide should not be used in all comers with ARDS / ALI, is its use justified to improve oxygenation in severe respiratory failure?
