Randomised Controlled Trial

Gattinoni L. Tognoni G. Pesenti A et al. Prone-Supine Study Group.
Effect of prone positioning on the survival of patients with acute respiratory failure.
New England Journal of Medicine 2001; 345(8):568-73.

Major Finding

Prone positioning in ALI and ARDS improves oxygenation but not mortality beyond 10 days.

Point for discussion:

Although prone positioning does not improve mortality outcome in ARDS, does it remain an useful temporising manoeuvre in the critically hypoxic ARDS patient?
