Dellinger et al. ARDS and nitric oxide RCT. CCM 1998

Created: 15/5/2007
Updated: 15/5/2007

Paper type

Randomised Controlled Trial

Reference

Dellinger RP. Zimmerman JL. Taylor RW et al.
Effects of inhaled nitric oxide in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: results of a randomized phase II trial. Inhaled Nitric Oxide in ARDS Study Group.
Critical Care Medicine 1998; 26(1):15-23.

Major Finding

Nitirc oxide does not seem to offer an outcome benefit in ARDS but does show safety with reasonable efficacy in improving oxygenation at the 5ppm dose.

Point for discussion:

This trial does not justify the widespread use of nitric oxide in ARDS but should act as a catalyst for further RCTs at the 5ppm dose in all types of ARDS patients and not exclude those with hypotension and multi-organ failure.
