Eligibility criteria for FRCA

One of the most commonly asked questions which prospective candidates are asked concerns eligibility criteria. These are a source of some confusion. The following text has been taken from the Royal College of Anaesthestists' website.

SECTION 3: ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility for the Primary FRCA examination

5. A person is eligible to enter for the Primary FRCA examination who:
(a) is eligible for registration with the General Medical Council (United
Kingdom), whether such registration is full or limited; and
(b) is registered with the College as a postgraduate trainee in the specialty
of anaesthesia, or is exempt from such registration, not being in a
training post in the UK at the time of sitting the examination; and
(c) has completed one year of training in post(s) in the UK approved by the
Royal College of Anaesthetists , or one year of training in the Republic of
Ireland in post(s) approved by the College of Anaesthetists of the Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland; and
(d) satisfies the requirements of these Regulations with regard to application
procedures and other matters;

6. A person shall not be eligible to enter for the Primary FRCA examination, who
has attempted and failed:
(a) Part 1 of the three part examination for the Fellowship of the Royal
College of Anaesthetists 6 times and would therefore no longer have
been eligible to enter for that examination
(b) The Primary FRCA examination 4 times
(c) The Primary FRCA examination twice, until they have attended the
mandatory guidance (see regulation 26(a).

Eligibility for the Final examination


7. A person is eligible to enter for the Final FRCA examination who:
(a) is registered with the College as a postgraduate trainee in the specialty
of anaesthesia or is exempt from such registration, not being in a
training post in the UK at the time of sitting the examination; and
(b) has passed the Primary FRCA examination; or
(c) satisfies the conditions stated in Regulation 7 even if they have failed the
Primary FRCA examination 4 times;
(d) has completed thirty months of training in the specialty of anaesthesia.
The specified period of training shall have been completed in approved
posts within the United Kingdom, or in posts in the Republic of Ireland
approved by the College of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland except that candidates who are not claiming time in
a supernumerary or honorary SHO post under regulation 1(b)(v) may
claim a period of up to twelve months overseas; and
(e) the end of the training shall be a date not earlier than five years before
the closing date of the sitting applied for, with the exception that an
NCCG, who is a member of the College and currently practising in the
UK, shall not be subject to this 5 year limit, provided the application has
the support of the local Regional Advisor;
(f) is in good standing with the College and satisfies the requirements of
these Regulations with regard to application procedures and other
matters.

8. A person shall not be eligible to enter the Final FRCA examination, who
has attempted and failed:
(a) the Final FRCA examination 3 times, until they have attended the
mandatory guidance (see regulation 26(b);
(b) the Final FRCA examination 6 times.

Exemptions


9. a candidate for the Final FRCA examination shall be exempt from passing the
Primary FRCA examination, who, within the ten years preceding the closing
date of the sitting applied for, and only in such years as are specified, and
subject to annual renewal of approval by the Council:

(a) has passed Part 2 of the examination for the Fellowship of The Royal
College of Anaesthetists, or the Primary examination for the Fellowship
of the Faculty or College of Anaesthetists of The Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland or, prior to October 1999, Part II of the Faculty of
Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland; or

(b) has obtained any of the following qualifications:
(i) Fellowship of the Faculty or College of Anaesthetists of the Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland;
(ii) Doctor of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) of the University of
Colombo, Sri Lanka;
(iii) Master of Anaesthesia of the University of Khartoum, Sudan,
awarded in respect of success in the relevant examination taken
in 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 or any year after that;
(iv) Master of Medicine (Anaesthesia) of the National University of
Singapore awarded in respect of success in the relevant
examination taken in 1991 or any year after that;
(v) Fellowship in Anaesthesiology of the College of Physicians and
Surgeons Pakistan awarded in respect of success in the relevant
examination from April 1998;
(vi) Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of
Anaesthetists;
(vii) Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa;
(viii) Certificate of the American Board of Anaesthesiology;
(ix) Fellowship in Anaesthesia of the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada
(x) Fellowship of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and
Surgeons since July 1999;
(xi) Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists since
January 2001; or

(c) has passed the examinations for the European Diploma in
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care of the European Academy of
Anaesthesiology;

(d) has obtained such other degree or qualification as the Council may from
time to time accept.
