Description: Consultant led, intensive VIVA preparation course giving trainees extensive VIVA practice for the exam. The course also gives insight into the examination process by giving candidates the experience of being an examiner. The aim of the day is to provide candidates with enough VIVA practice to give the required preparation and confidence to pass the exams.

I recently attended the Cambridge Final FRCA Viva day and it was one of the best days I have attended so far in preparation for the exam. The whole affair was very professionally conducted and to the time and at the same time sounded quite realistic from exam perspectives. The feedback was very good with lots of personalised comments and ways to improve results. Also the presence of a couple of examiners really helped. There was ample viva practice.Overall it was a course, which I would recommend to anyone planning to take the Final exam. A good course to attend between the written and the vivas. Very well organised with lots of practice with both consultants and postfellowship registrars. Excellent case scenarios with X Rays and ECG.

This was an excellent course. I would recommend it to everyone. It was organised properly. They simulated exam conditions very well. The consultants and senior registrars were well read and they gave lots of suggestions and feedback at end of each viva, which I found very useful. The rapid fire round was unique and very helpful. (they covered 12 topics in 1 hour each five minutes). Two of the topics came up in my clinical sciences viva and hence I was able to answer these topics well. I would like to  thank the organisers personally for helping me to sail through the exam. Good luck to everyone.

Good balance between practice MCQ, SAQ and VIVAs at exam standard. They also provide feedback on performance in all parts. Lectures were more like tutorials focusing on exam topics specific to related subspecialties. Food was impressive, coupled with proper Northern hospitality! Felt very welcome. Would recommend!

Devon Anaesthesia Finals Training (DAFT)

Dates:30 November and 1 December 2010
Address:Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre, Buckfastleigh, Devon, UK
Tel:01752 439205
Cost:£300.00
Email:samantha.allen@phnt.swest.nhs.uk
Description:This is a 2 day viva practice course for registrars about to sit the Final FRCA vivas. There will be basic science and clinical viva practice and formal vivas in the same format as the Final examination. There will also be short masterclasses on targeted subjects, potential pitfalls and viva technique.

There will be a large consultant faculty acting as 'examiners'. The aim is to help our candidates become more comfortable in a viva setting and so pass first time!

Really really good, did other much more well known courses and this blew them away. Really intense viva practice, spaced with a few really useful little sessions, super friendly helpful faculty. Kind of wish I was a deveon trainee! Totally reccomended. Is probably what made the difference - I passed!

A fantastically well organised 2 day course with consultant lead vivas, several whole exams (long cases and vivas) and useful tutorials. Tiring but great practice. Made me feel more comfortable in verbalising my answers before the big day.

Very well run and friendly Course faculty. Excellent vivas exactly like the exam (Consultant & SR led), harder than the real day, immediate feedback and advice. Exam day in suits and smarts was a nice touch. Perfectly timed in the final week prior to exams, allowing a burst of intense practice when likely to be flagging and most of the hard work is done. Good lectures esp on 'Key Papers'. Great course which covers masses without even noticing it. A 'must attend course' before the vivas, a great help in passing the FRCA. The after course beers (on the faculty) help too.

Well structured and on the whole the lectures were good and relevant. Exam practice was excellent. Two course meals - good value for the money.

I attended the Frenchay Final FRCA Course for the April Exam 2008.It was a really well organized course, covers a lot of areas and the best thing was that even after the course had finished the Course organizer J Nickells remains in touch and helps out with any queries or Exam related problems via a crammer news group through e mail.Overall I would definitely recommend this course to all taking the Finals

Mersey School of Anaesthesia and Peri-operative Medicine Final FRCA Booker Course

Dates:Contact course organiser
Address:Mersey School (AUH), Clinical Sciences Centre, Aintree Hospitals, Liverpool L9 7AL, UK
Cost:£500.00
Email:DEBRA.LINACRE@aht.nwest.nhs.uk
Web Site:http://www.msoa.org.uk
Description:Known eponymously as the Booker Course, this two week course is organised and run by Dr Peter Booker, Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Anaesthesia, Department of Anaesthesia, University of Liverpool and RCA Examiner for the Final FRCA. The Booker Course is the Flagship of the Courses run by the Mersey School for the Final FRCA Examination Application form can be downloaded by clicking here. For Deanery Candidates, cost is £250

The Mersey Final FRCA Booker course was good as it covers a lot of ground, unfortunately there is only Dr Booker marking your SAQs so only one is marked per week (about £350 per SAQ!). Never the less the amount of experience one gains in writing and marking questions is excellent. The Mersey VIVA course was not so good, I think it will improve with time.

Mersey School of Anaesthesia and Peri-operative Medicine Final FRCA viva weekend

Dates:Contact course organiser
Address:Mersey School (AUH), Clinical Sciences Centre, Aintree Hospitals, Liverpool L9 7AL, UK
Cost:£250.00
Email:DEBRA.LINACRE@aht.nwest.nhs.uk
Description:This is to be the fifth staging of the course. The course will only be of value to those candidates who survive the SAQ/MCQ hurdle and who have been invited to London for the vivas. The Mersey School has an adequate collection of vivas with which to play. The Director of the Mersey School, who will be conducting the course, has a fair idea as to how candidates should present themselves in a viva situation. For most of the weekend, the candidates will be performing as Examiners and as Examinees in as formal a circumstance as can be mustered. There will also be the opportunity to peruse & analyse a large collection of Vivas on the Basic Sciences. The aim of the weekend will be to suffuse the candidates with so much exposure to Viva Practice that, come the day in London, they will be immune to the Stress & Stupidity that so often spells disaster.

Royal College of Anaesthetists Final FRCA course

Dates:Contact course organiser
Address:The Royal College of Anaesthetists, Churchill House, 35 Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4SG, UK
Tel:+44 (0)20 7813 1900
Fax:+44 020 7636 8280
Cost:£500.00
Email:educ@rcoa.ac.uk
Description:The Final FRCA course has been reduced from three weeks to two weeks, the days will be longer and will retain most of the lectures given during the original three week course. This course is intended for those studying for the Final FRCA Exam and consists of two weeks of full-time lectures on anaesthesia, intensive care and pain relief. The lectures run throughout the day – Monday to Friday. Tutorials will also be held during the course and each participant will be entitled to attend four tutorials. The Course will be held in the Lecture Theatre at the Clore Management Centre, 25 – 27 Torrington Square, London, WC1E 7JL, which is a 5 minute walk from the College. The tutorials will be held at The Royal College of Anaesthetists, 48/49 Russell Square, London WC1B 4JY.

2 weeks full time 09:00 to 04:30 with extra tutorials (18:00 for 5 days). Very good lectures (almost without exception) - all the people that write the books and more! Rather hard to keep up the enthusiasm for such a long course - the brain needs completely recharging after each day and there really isn't time to do that. Good course notes in a lever arch file for reminding yourself later. Course notes are therefore available before the lectures which is good (pre study makes the lecture more digestible). Might be nice to have the notes for a few weeks before the course. Gives a good motivational boost and also makes you think about your current practice
