I found the course very helpful indeed. 11 realistic viva practices each, in pairs therefore you experience 22 vivas in total. Viva'd by registrars and consultants. Good feedback. Friendly faculty and lots of food provided including massive, yummy curry! Worthwhile, useful course and fun group of people.

Engaging and entertaining faculty. Plenty of opportunity to practise viva technique with a mixture of registrars and consultants (at least 10 vivas) Troubleshooting sessions covering particularly challenging concepts.
Thoroughly recommended!

24 candidates, split into 2 groups for most of it. There are a few "lectures" running over the commonest/ difficult topics(stats/pharmacokinetics/radiology etc) and several small group (3-4) teaching sesions. One of the practise vivas is recorded on video and provides a great insight into your mannerisms. An afternoon is taken up with a mock OSCE, done in realtime (14 stations, mixture of comm skills / history taking / machine checks / ECGs etc). Another is taken up with a mock viva - pretty close to the real thing (2 examiners per table, 2 tables). Your marks / performance are all fed back to you at the end of the course. One very helpful feature is that at the end of the course you're given a CD/DVD containing all the handouts, as well as videos of machine checks, anatomy demonstrations, useful viva graphs etc. It seems to be a real attempt to prepare you for the proper exam, and I found it provides valuable insight into particular strenghts and weaknesses.

Oxford Primary FRCA Course

Dates:Contact course organiser
Address:The Departmental Administrator, The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics, The University of Oxford, The John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DU
Cost:£600.00
Email:anaesthetics@nda.ox.ac.uk
Web Site:http://www.nda.ox.ac.uk
Description:The Oxford Primary FRCA Course consists of one week of lectures and tutorials covering the vital parts of the exam syllabus and includes MCQ practice. The course is updated annually in response to candidate feedback. The limited number of places ensures you are not lost in a huge lecture theatre. As well as covering physiology and pharmacology, our particular strengths are physics and clinical measurement. These subjects are responsible for the failure of most candidates who are unsuccessful in the examination. We know from feedback from previous courses that participants have welcomed the expertise of our enthusiastic faculty which includes academic staff as well as expert NHS consultant teachers from the Oxford School of Anaesthesia: this combination reflects the profile of the Primary FRCA examiners. A huge file of educational material is provided to all candidates. The course is held St Anne’s College in the centre of Oxford: an ideal setting for an academic week. A walking tour of Oxford is arranged during the course.

I] I did the Oxford course in 2004 and found it a great help. I went on to pass the exam first time. A few friends of mine also found it good. It is 2 weeks of lectures, with a fairly informal MCQ paper each day. They try to concentrate on topics that have caught people out in the past. They are especially good at physics and equipment because that appears to be the main sticking point. They offer a further free one day intensive OSCE and Viva course to those sit the main course and then pass the MCQ.

II] Nuffield Dept of Anaesthetics, Oxford Primary FRCA course (Feb 2006)

I found this course invaluable in my preparation for the April 06 Primary. Two weeks of lectures from practising anaesthetists with special interests in the various topics pertinent to the exam, was an ideal set-up. There was MCQ practice on each day and an invitation to viva and OSCE practice for those successful in the MCQ. A number of the topics covered came up verbatim in my viva. I managed a 2+ in every component of my primary and I'm convinced that the Oxford primary course made all the difference.

The course is excellent. A good mix of MCQs very close to the standard in the actual exam I didn't see anywhere else (which you can take home) and relevant lectures. NOT just 3 days of MCQs. The strategies given undoubtedly helped me pass the MCQ. Quality lectures from people who actually set exams. Excellent setting and phenomenal value for money.

Russells Hall Hospital Primary Primer

Dates:Contact course organiser
Address:Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 2HQ
Tel:See website for contact details
Cost:£150.00
Email:paul.hudson@dgoh.nhs.uk
Web Site:http://primaryprimer.webeden.co.uk
Description:

After discussions with trainees who had successfully passed the primary, they informed us that some subjects are variably taught and poorly understood. We have designed a course, which will be taught predominantly in small groups, to cover these harder topics - electricity, pharmacokinetics, statistics and many more. Basically, things we wished we'd had explained to us before we started work. This course was successfully run for the first time in January 2010 and again in 2011. It was extremely well received with 100% of candidates stating that they would recommend the course to a colleague. It is ideal for candidates about to start revision for the first attempt or for those resitting who need to expand their knowledge base.

"good range of topics - lots covered."

"friendly faculty not at all intimidating"

"some entertaining speakers who explained difficult topics well"

"complex topics well taught"

SCIPY Course: An intensive Primary FRCA exam preparation course

Dates:See SCIPY website for course dates and application timetable
Address:Ramada Encore Hotel, Whinby Road, Dodworth, Barnsley, S75 3LF
Cost:£350.00
Email:enquiries@scipy.org.uk
Web Site:http://www.scipy.org.uk
Description:SCIPY in an intensive Primary FRCA exam preparation course. It is a Northern based version of the very successful South Coast Intensive Primary (SCIP) course which has now been running for more than ten years with fantastic results.

The 2-day course is designed to give essential help for the OSCE/SOE day of the exam. It concentrates on exam technique, looking at commonly occurring exam questions and practice, practice, practice.

The first day is spent preparing candidates with a series of tutorials, workgroups and practice sessions aimed at improving their exam technique in a constructive, non-threatening manner. These sessions are in small groups of 4-8 candidates with plenty of opportunity for interaction. These sessions include commonly occurring topics, a resuscitation refresher and those topics which are generally poorly taught including statistics and communication for exams.

The second day of SCIPY is all about practice. The group is divided into 2 with one group practicing OSCEs in the morning and SOEs in the afternoon and the other group vice versa. This is a chance to use the skills you have learnt on Day 1, to show how much you have improved and to consolidate your knowledge. We aim to have College examiners with us on the course as they provide valuable insight into the exam process and are highly skilled in showing areas that need more practice before sitting the exam for real. Candidates will do 2 full OSCEs and 2 full SOEs. They also get the chance to observe 2 full SOEs.

"To complete TWO full sets of SOE and [two] 16- station OSCE is a real accomplishment by the faculty and much appreciated by me as a candidate (especially a week before the real thing) - so sincere thanks''
